Peony Crochet Cowl (FREE Pattern)

I had a great day listening to an audio book (“Fall On Your Knees” by Ann-Marie MacDonald) and finishing a cowl this afternoon. My 9 year old daughter has been my patient model as I master my iPhone photo-taking skills. I’ve been using white backdrops and figured out a combo of natural and a lamp to get crisp shots plus some online photo editing sites. I think I’m improving. I listed this item on my Etsy shop if you want to check it out. Feedback on my little shop is appreciated as I’m a fairly new online business owner. What

Keeping Busy with Crafts

I haven’t had the mindset or the arm strength to finish any projects but here is what I’m playing with this week craft-wise. I wasn’t really looking for a new project but I found this really fun pattern that uses two contrasting variegated yarn colours to make a scarf. This yarn is Bernat Mosaic. I’m loving how it’s working up! I have some gorgeous alpaca/silk blend yarn to crochet a pair of baby sandals. Still on the first one but isn’t it adorable?! I’m working on machine quilting this lovely quilt to be donated through the Victoria’s Quilt organization. After several

Quilting Injury

I had a marathon quilting session on the Easter weekend (April 3-6). I successfully long-arm quilted two queen-size quilts and one king-size quilt in 2.5 very long days. There was a push for me to finish these all as we were visiting my mother-in-law who has a king-sized frame (mine only holds up to a queen) and since I had 4 days up there I decided it was the perfect opportunity to focus and complete these quilts. The downside was that after 13 hour days my arms started to hurt. Turns out I gave myself “tennis elbow”. I have been

Project RED

I volunteer my longarm quilting services for Project RED, an organization that makes quilts which are then given to local agencies such as Grand River Hospital Pediatrics and Children’s Aid, as well as those in need around the world. This time I received two panels to make up. It was great practice for my new pantograph “Modern Twist”. The first quilt is a Mary Engelbreit piece. You can see the quilting very nicely on the back. The second is a tractor. Do you make crafts for charity and, if so, what do you make?

March 2015 Crafts

In March I set a list of 10 items I wanted to get done. I forgot that March break was there where I basically was at the mercy of my school-agers and I got really sick with the flu the week before that. Here is the summary of my goals and how I managed. 1. Complete my daughter’s queen-size quilt!! This was my biggest success especially as her birthday was in March. I will do a separate post soon on this with all the details. Here is a sneak peek at it on the bed. 2. Knit alpaca wristers (FREE pattern link)

Wild Kratts Costume Reveal & Instructions

I was going through the photos on my iPhone earlier today and I realized I never showed the final Wild Kratts costumes. In September 2014 I did a “How to Make a Wild Kratts Costume” tutorial. I ended up buying cotton tee shirts and cropping them. I hemmed the bottom of the shirt and then got felt and zig-zag stitched the rectangles and circles. Finally, I got some clear plastic from a bag that came with a sheet set and I zig-zag stitched it on the sides and bottom. This lets the kids insert their “creature power discs” no problem.

Learning to Machine Applique

On Saturday I took my first quilting class by Karen Kay Buckley where we learned how to machine applique. Karen was gracious enough to snap a photo with me after a long day of learning and sewing: Karen Kay Buckley & I In addition to learning and playing with a machine applique piece, I also went shopping at her display. I bought an adjustable square which I am sure will save me a lot of time and money on individual rulers. This gives me as small as 4″ and as large as 24.5″ to square up my quilt! Here is

My Guest Speaker Gig

I recently discovered podcasts. I love how you can search for any topic and find a plethora of shows. When I first started I discovered “Canadian Quilt Talk”. Brandy Lynn has a way of asking just the question that I’m thinking as the guest is discussing their expertise. “Canadian Quilt Talk is a weekly online podcast that aims to inspire quilters and fibre artists alike with tips, tricks and the latest products.” (source) It is with great pleasure that today I am the guest speaker on Brandy Lynn’s show, discussing tips for quilters who are considering taking their quilt top

Knit Hockey Sweater

This winter we have been overwhelmed by our first year of ringette and hockey. During one of my daughter’s ringette tournaments, I convinced my son to come to the Mary Maxim store that was just a few minutes from where we were. He is the BEST person to shop with for yarn! He’s only 7 and he kept offering to hold my ever-growing pile of yarn. He said “Mom, as long as I can carry it, you can buy it”.  Well, we loaded him up and all his bends too (you know, armpits, elbows, neck) so he wouldn’t drop it.

Blind Date with a Book

I was visiting my public library and they had a great idea – a “blind date with a book”. The books were wrapped in brown craft paper with a brief description. This is the one I chose.  You know what was really funny? I was nervous to open it. It’s silly but perhaps, like a blind date, the anticipation built and I didn’t want to be let down. I kept off opening it for so long that it became due before I got to read it. Want to know what book was wrapped inside this “Beautiful & Intense” description? “When

This quilt I did free motion stipple quilting using a “homemade frame” and my domestic sewing machine. Read more about this quilt here.

2-Colour Brioche Knit Stitch

Brioche stitch (front on left, back on right) Credit: the Brioche Stitch blog  “The Brioche Stitch (or combination of stitches) creates a pretty, flat, double-sided fabric.” (verypink.com) To learn how to knit up this stitch pattern, check out Very Pink for a how-to video tutorial. If you prefer to follow a written instruction, here is a link to the Brioche Stitch blog with one. Organizing Sewing Needles & Pins

I have 4 sewing machines. My 8 year old daughter and I each have a basic Kenmore, I have a serger, and I have my long-arm quilting machine. Each of these machines has their own needles and I use different lengths of pins for a variety of projects. Now how to organize them all so I can find them when I need them? The Domestic Diva’s Disaster’s blog has also had this problem and she posted an informative article on just how to organize the needles and pins. What is your favourite tip and/or how do you organize your supplies?

Quilt Binding Basics

Many quilters I know (including myself) find the binding bitter-sweet. In some ways it is wonderful knowing that once complete your project is done. In other ways making and attaching the binding fabric is quite fiddly and time-consuming. Heather, from The Sewing Loft has created a picture tutorial “Quilt Binding Made Simple”. Baby Chevron Quilt

I had the pleasure of long-arm quilting this purple and green chevron baby quilt for Irene B. of Bear Hug Quilts. The pantograph used is Mod Dotz. This is just off the long-arm frames so the binding still needs to be complete. The flow of the swirls versus the hard lines of the chevron really captivates me. The back view of the quilt. I’m sharing this post at these linky parties.
